New census data shows that Huntsville is now the largest city in Alabama, the Associated Press reports. Huntsville has a population of 215,006. Birmingham, which had long been Alabama’s largest city, has a population of 200,733. Montgomery is Alabama’s third-largest city with a population of 200,603.
The population of Huntsville has sky-rocketed since 2010, up 19%. Birmingham meanwhile, has decreased in population in the same time period.
The recent growth is due to an influx of jobs in the area, including a Toyota-Mazda plant, a new FBI Headquarters at Redstone Arsenal, and other projects.
That growth has also had a large impact on housing across the 256. Home prices are up with an average sales price of $294,000. 1,670 homes sold in June of this year, compared to 1,574 in 2020. The average price for a home sold in Huntsville is $326,000 where homes are only staying on the market for an average of 13 days.
